The Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Service was started in 1999 in Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre with the establishment of a unit comprising consultants with special interests and expertise in HPB and GI surgery. In 2006, this unit became a separate department and was recognised for the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Surgical Gastroenterology Programme of the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery has consultants who have specialised in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal surgery.
