Biological valves, derived from human or animal tissue, include allografts, porcine valves, and bovine valves. While the risk of stroke is lower with biological valves, they have a shorter lifespan compared to mechanical ones.

What Happens During a Double Valve Replacement (DVR) Procedure?

Performed under general anesthesia, DVR involves making incisions to replace valves. Traditional surgery requires a large incision, while minimally invasive procedures use shorter incisions to reduce infection risk. A bypass machine maintains blood flow, and once the valves are replaced, incisions are closed, drains are placed, and patients are monitored in the ICU.

While DVR has associated risks, the fatality rate is low. Complications may include bleeding, infection, blood clots leading to stroke or heart attack, breathing problems, valve failure, endocarditis, pneumonia, arrhythmias, and allergic reactions to anesthesia.

Care after Procedure

Post-surgery, patients are monitored in the ICU with IV fluids, painkillers, and antibiotics. Oxygen may be provided, and drains and catheters are used to eliminate waste. After ICU, patients move to regular rooms, gradually starting movement and breathing exercises. Post-discharge instructions include avoiding heavy lifting, taking prescribed medications, resting, avoiding stress, and making lifestyle changes.
