He also did the first LVAD and HVAD pump transplant in India in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
In his career spanning over three decades he has performed 16000 cardiac surgeries
Since 2010, he has carried out 180 Heart Transplants, 9 Heart and Lung Transplants, and 30 Lung Transplants and holds the record of doing highest number of transplants in India.
He is highly skilled in performing various Cardiothoracic and Vascular procedures including Mitral Valve Replacement, Aortic Valve Repair and Replacement, Coronary Angiogram etc.
Dr Balakrishnan has got the opportunity to work with Sir Brian Barratt –Boyes, Green lane Hospital, New Zealand and Dr Albert Starr at Oregon Health Science University and St. Vincent Hospital, USA.
He successfully revived a patient whose heart had stopped beating for 45 minutes with heart transplant.
He played the pivotal role in setting up India’s First Comprehensive Centre for Heart Failure Management at Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai.
