Brachial Plexus Injuries
Brachial Plexus Injuries
The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that connect the spinal cord and the nerves present in the armpit. Injury to the brachial plexus can range from minor to severe. However, the surgery is not required for minor damage, but it should not be ignored. The doctor recommends surgery for a patient with a severe nerve injury termed as avulsion, rupture or laceration. Avulsions are the most severe type of brachial plexus injury, as in this case, the nerve root gets disconnected resulting in a partially or fully paralyzed arm.

Symptoms of brachial plexus injury:
Symptoms of the brachial plexus injury may include weakness, paralysis, numbness or pain in the shoulder, arm, hand or finger, depending on the extent of the damage to each nerve.
Diagnosis:
Depending upon the type and severity of the injury, the doctor will first conduct some examinations and tests like EMG, MRI, Nerve Conduction Studies, Computerized Tomography (CT), that will help in making a further better diagnosis of the patient’s injury.
Treatment Options:
Treatment options for brachial plexus injury can either be surgical or non-surgical depending on the intensity of the injury, patient’s age and duration of the injury.
Surgical Options:
The surgical treatment is normally required when the nerves are unable to recover by themselves, or become irrecoverable enough to create a disruption in their normal functioning. Some of the common surgical options for brachial plexus injury are:
- Muscle transfer: In this procedure, the surgeon removes a muscle or ligament, which is of less importance, and transfers it to the arm for restoring the nerves and blood vessels supplying that muscle.
- Nerve transfer: In this procedure, the surgeon transfers a healthy nerve to the place of an injured nerve.
- Nerve grafting: The surgeon Replaces the damaged brachial plexus nerves by surgically procuring less important nerves from other parts of the body.
Non-surgical Option:
This form of treatment normally includes various types of therapies, physical therapies, and therapeutic motion movements for injuries that get improved by themselves within a few weeks or months.
Cost of the Treatment:
The treatment cost for brachial plexus injury starts from 4800 USD. However, it varies depending on the type of treatments like Muscle transfer, Nerve transfer, or Nerve grafting.
