Discogram Surgeon in India
Lumbar Discography Diagnosis
A discogram, also known as discography, is a diagnostic procedure used to assess whether an intervertebral disc in the lower back is the source of back pain. The intervertebral discs act as shock absorbers between the spine’s vertebrae, maintaining flexibility and support. When a disc becomes damaged due to factors such as heavy lifting or age-related wear and tear, the outer layer weakens and the inner gel-like material may bulge or rupture. A bulging or ruptured disc can be extremely painful, as it may compress the nerves within the spinal column, leading to back pain, neck pain, and leg pain.
Get Opinion From Doctor
During a discogram, a skilled specialist, can determine which disc is causing your discomfort by injecting contrast dye into the discs and visualising them on X-ray or CT scans. This process enables the healthcare provider to identify the specific disc that may require treatment or surgical intervention.
The Procedure
The discogram procedure typically involves the following steps:
- Sedation: You may receive intravenous medication to help you relax. Subsequently, you will lie face down on an X-ray table.
- Local Anesthesia: The doctor will numb the skin in the back area by applying local anesthesia.
- Needle Insertion: A needle is carefully inserted into the center of the disc. Contrast dye is then injected into the disc.
- Discomfort Assessment: You will be asked to rate any discomfort or pain you experience in your back or legs during the procedure.
- Imaging: X-ray or CT scans will be taken of the injected discs to assess for any disc tears or damage.
The entire process typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, followed by a 30-minute observation period. Afterward, you can return home.
Post-Procedure:
After the discogram procedure, you may experience some pain or discomfort at the injection sites, but this should subside over time. You can resume your regular diet and medications immediately. However, it’s advisable not to drive or engage in strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. Rest and a gradual return to your usual activities are recommended.
A discogram is an invaluable diagnostic tool when you’ve been experiencing persistent back pain that hasn’t improved in 4 to 6 months, and other treatments like physical therapy have proven ineffective. The procedure, complemented by X-ray or CT scans, helps pinpoint the specific cause of your discomfort.
